21:1, encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted a 1080p transfer, Luchino Visconti's The Leopard arrives on Blu-ray courtesy of Criterion. The following texts appears in the booklet provided with this Blu-ray disc: "Director of photography Giuseppe Rotunno supervised this high-definition digital transfer, which was created on a Spirit Datacine from the original 35mm 8-perforation negative. Thousands of instances of dirt, debris, scratches, splices, warps, jitter, and flicker were manually removed using MTI's DRS system and Pixel Farm's PFClean system, while Digital Vision's DVNR system was used for small dirt, grain, and noise reduction". "The American version of The Leopard is presented in the aspect ratio of 2. 35:1. Black bars at the top and bottom of the screen are normal for this format. The digital transfer was created on a Spirit Datacine from 4-perforation 35mm interpositive. The 4-perforation reduction was created in the 2. 35:1 aspect ratio". The Italian version of The Leopard looks absolutely stunning.

Fine object detail is excellent, clarity very impressive and contrast levels consistent throughout the entire film. It is the film's color-scheme, however, that impresses the most. Yellows, greens, blues, reds, browns, blacks and whites are notably rich and well saturated. Edge-enhancement and macroblocking are never an issue of concern. The film's grain structure is also intact, though some minor noise corrections have been applied. Furthermore, there are absolutely no stability issues to report in this review either. Finally, I did not see any large cuts, splices, debris, or stains. All in all, this is an outstanding Blu-ray release by the folks at Criterion, and in my opinion the best one yet in their quite remarkable catalog. The American version of The Leopard is encoded with MPEG-4 AVC and granted a 1080i transfer. Unlike the Italian version, the American version has a fairly inconsistent color-scheme and is plagued by a variety of minor flecks, stains, marks, scratches, and cuts.

Il gattopardo / The Leopard (1963) 3 x DVD9 and 2 x Blu-Ray Criterion Collection on January 14th, 2019 at 23:46 To best appreciate The Leopard, it is important to understand the political undercurrents of the film. Italy, circa 1859, was a fragmented collection of independent states, each controlled by different ruling interests. The Papal states resided in central Italy. Towards the south, King Ferdinand II ruled over the Bourbon states of Naples and Sicily. The Savoy States were ruled by Victor Emmanuel. Austria, after the Napoleonic Wars, had seized control of Northern Italy. The film takes place during the heart of the Italian Risorgimento, a time of nineteenth-century social upheaval in which the Italian states rebelled against the existing aristocratic order to form a unified and democratic Italy. Burt Lancaster plays Don Fabrizio, the proud yet aging Prince of Salina, emblematic of the old society and yet fully aware that his way-of-life is slowly fading into oblivion. Garibaldi, who is attempting to unite all of Italy into one nation, has landed in Sicily, and even his adored nephew, Tancredi (Alain Delon), who he has fancied to be his successor, has joined his army.

Il Gattopardo) is an award-winning 1963 film by Italian director Luchino Visconti, based on Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa 's novel of the same name. The film features an international cast including the American Burt Lancaster, the Frenchman Alain Delon and the Italians Claudia Cardinale and Terence Hill. It is generally seen today in the Italian language version, in which Lancaster's lines are dubbed into Italian by another actor; however, an English dubbed version was also produced at the time, in which Lancaster's own voice is heard. When Visconti was told by producers that they needed to cast a star in order to help to ensure that they'd earn enough money to justify the big budget, Visconti's first choice was one of the Soviet Union's preeminent actors, Nikolai Cherkasov. Learning that Cherkasov was in no condition, healthwise, to take the part, Visconti then set his hopes on getting Laurence Olivier, but he already had another commitment. The producers chose legendary Hollywood star Burt Lancaster without consulting Visconti, which insulted the great director and caused tension on the set, but the director and Hollywood star ended up working well together, and their resulting friendship lasted the rest of their lives.
