There have been a number of series based on Henning Mankell's Wallander series (Kenneth Branagh played the detective during four seasons that aired from 2008-16), so this could be compared to all of them… except, um, Wallander is younger than in those other series. Our Take: Young Wallander, created by Ben Harris, is supposed to show the newly-minted detective handling the huge responsibility of having such a job at such a young age, paired with a very contemporary story about the racism and mistrust that's rife in a supposedly progressive country like Sweden. And, while the first episode moved along well and started building the mystery at its center without a ton of story-disabling exposition, we're not sure what kind of character this young version of Wallander is… at least not yet.
