Writer-director Raúl Ruiz offers us here a biographical fantasy revolving around the life of the Austrian symbolist painter Gustav Klimt (1862–1918). It opens with Klimt (John Malkovich) on his death bed in a Viennese hospital and visited by his friend, fellow artist Egon Schiele (Nikolai Kinski).
